Introduction:

Behind alcohol and tobacco, cannabis is now the third most popular drug in the whole world!! and with that the most common illegal one. So is it time to legalise it? This speech will show the benefits of legalising marijuana and compare it to some of the popular legal drugs.

Body 1:

The biggest misconception of marijuana is the addictiveness of it. While it is considered a ‘gateway’ drug, marijuana leads to dependence in only around 9-10 percent of adult users, while cocaine hooks about 20 percent of its users, and heroin hooking 25 percent of its users. However, the worst culprit is tobacco with an almighty 30 percent of its users becoming dependent on it. Alcohol and tobacco are both common legal drugs, yet have more significant and impacting consequences than marijuana. Drinking heavily or binge drinking can cause potential death, and both these drugs can cause a form of cancer, lung cancer from tobacco and liver cancer from drinking. Cannabis was once thought to have been a cause of lung cancer, but that has since been debunked.

Body 2:

When marijuana was first legalised in the state of Colorado as part of an experiment, people predicted that the crime rate would rise… the crime rate lowered by 6%, leaving the people who predicted it would raise are left to eat their words. By this drop in crime, it has given police more time to spend on more important jobs and exercises like house robberies and assaults rather than just arresting someone for something as little as possessing marijuana. The crime rate as also lowered due to a cut in income to organised crime. Gangs and groups commonly used cannabis as an easy income to fund their criminal activities, so legalising cannabis would cut that stem of income right out of their hands.

Body 3:

Now we move on to the big kid in the room, the biggest reason people want it legalised. Medicinal Cannabis. Cannabis can be used to reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, to improve appetite in people with HIV/AIDS, and to treat

chronic pain and muscle spasms. The drug has been used medicinally since 4000 B.C, where the herb was used as an anaesthetic. But why use cannabis instead of other pain killers?… This is because cannabis pain relief comes within minutes while prescription painkillers can take longer than 45 minutes to take effect. Even though marijuana can be used to help with pain, people under 21 shouldn’t use cannabis, even for medicinal reasons. It damages the developing brain, causing lasting memory damage and a lowering IQ. This has been proven by Experts found that adults who smoked pot when the were children did worse on IQ and decision making test then those who didn’t.

Conclusion:

Which leads me to my conclusion, cannabis is a very misconceived drug. Many people believe as it is illegal it can harm you worse than alcohol and tobacco for various reasons, it also money for the government, gives police more time for more valuable things, and is used medicinally. So in the end, why was it even illegal?

Thankyou.
