Essay Draft W-Owen

Introduction: The poems ”Dulce et Decorum Est”,  “Anthem for Doomed Youth” and “Exposure”  written by Wilfred Owen. Wilfred uses numerous language techniques throughout these poems in order to bring the idea of how war is not glorious and how it is “pointless” and a “waste of youth”. Similes, and Metaphors are used in these poems to convey the idea of how war is not glorious

The use of personification and similes and in the poem ”Dulce et Decorum Est”  shows us how the war is a waste of innocent young lives and how soldiers are suffering inhumanly. In the lines “And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime. – Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, as under a green sea I saw him drowning” Wilfred uses the language feature of the simile ‘as’ to elucidate what Wilfred Owen witnessed amongst the horror and brutality of his fellow friends and comrades deaths. It shows the idea of how war is not glorious because innocent soldiers are dying for no reason other than conflict. This theme impacted me as a reader because it makes me believe that all these innocent soldiers had died for no reason. It makes me think of how this world is hugely impacted and influenced by conflict every day and there is no one standing up for it. The idea of war relates to other events such as terror attacks, for example, the twin tower bombings and school shootings. I believe this because innocent people are dying as a result of conflict and reasons that no one sane can explain.

The use of metaphors used in ”Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen was in the line ‘Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots of gas-shells dropping softly behind’. This shows us the theme of how war is not glorious. Wilfred uses the language feature of the metaphor to ‘Drunk with fatigue’ to explain to us of the fatigued soldiers. He explains how they were so insanely fatigued that they could have appeared that as if they were drunk. It shows the idea of how war is not glorious because these soldiers were so incredibly affected mentally, physically and emotionally by the war that they struggled to carry out normal everyday human tasks. This theme impacted me as a reader because it allowed me to see and understand how these soldiers had committed and given their lives and word to their countries and how out of the goodness of them fighting for it they were presented with death and fatigue. Backing up the theme of how war is not glorious. This theme of how war is not glorious relates to the rallies and riots that take place nowadays for events that strike rebellion like women’s rights, and racial segregation. I believe this because although it’s only people standing up for what they support it has the same impact as war has on people. CS gas and Pepper spray has the same idea of  the physical effect on the supporters as war does on soldiers.
